We invite you to join us: Reach out to discuss your project needs and start a conversation. --- ## Horticulture Encounter 2018 URL: https://gmplandarch.com/horticulture-encounter-2018/ Nothing beats walking around a nursery on a gorgeous, sunny summer day observing beautiful plants in full bloom, being educated on the latest varieties in the field, and further understanding the benefits of plants in community with each other. At least, nothing beats an afternoon like that if you are a landscape architect. In June, a few GMPeeps were fortunate enough to spend such an afternoon with Suzie Wiest, at Village Nurseries in Miramar. Suzie walked us through garden display after garden display of artfully arranged growies (our affectionate term for plants), all the while discussing plants with a purpose. The sections of the display garden were organized into categories such as ‘therapeutic in nature’, ‘perfect pairings’, ‘edible excellence’, ‘partners in pollination’ and ‘blaze battlers’. The walk through the garden was followed by a delicious lunch, during which we got to hear from plant aficionado Nicholas Staddon – the ‘Plantsman’ himself –  about all the new introductions coming to the horticultural stage in the next few years. These are plants that aren’t even on the market yet, but are currently in the growth and development phase, so that was very exciting indeed! This event was not only beneficial in showcasing plants best suited for today’s landscape situations, but also enjoyable for all members in attendance. After all, if you can combine gorgeous plants, learning new things, and a perfect summer day with good food and better company, then you’re definitely doing something right. Although this event, spearheaded by Hunter’s Chris Roesink and Belgard’s Stan Jirovsky, is relatively new to the scene, it is a favorite of GMP employees, so we came ready to win. And we almost did. Highlights of this perfect spring evening at Viewpoint Brewery included punny team names (A-Maize-Bags and Corn Stars, to name a few), great food, better beer, rubbing elbows with jubilant design professionals, and aesthetically pleasing yet precarious hanging benches that gave you a heart attack any time anyone moved. GMP cornhole enthusiasts Leigh Olszewski and Rebecca Gedeon teamed up together with the sole motivation to dominate, to uphold Leigh’s winning title from the year prior. They moved their way gracefully up the bracket, narrowly missing the opportunity to play against fellow coworkers Rob Streza and Wazeem Khan, and found themselves throwing in the finals against John Avila (Urban Arena) and Rich Risner (Grounded Landscape Architecture). The game was long and tense, with a dramatic shift in Avila and Risner’s favor towards the end, which led to GMP settling (somewhat) peacefully into the second place title. Scott Ulrich, from QCP, generously provided company gift cards to the winners, and Amazon gift cards were passed out as well, so all in all, while the title of Cornhole Champions does not reside in GMP’s halls this year, the fantastic memories of a great industry event and new colleagues-turned friends will suffice. The true champions, along with the event coordinators! --- ## Planning Commission Approval for Persea project, City of Vista URL: https://gmplandarch.com/planning-commission-approval-for-persea-project-city-of-vista/ Persea by Orion Pacific was recently approved by the Vista Planning Commission and will move forward with plan submittals and approvals. GMP has had the pleasure of being involved with Persea since its inception and, in collaboration with the client and entire design team, has developed common area spaces and elements that complement the lifestyle of the upward bound/young achiever demographic that will call Persea home. The contemporary design of the buildings is accented by active recreation spaces that incorporate elements such as a 25yd lap pool, large spa, active use turf areas, and outdoor kitchen/dining spaces that offer seamless integration with the interior elements of the Clubhouse. Additionally, there are multiple ‘gathering nodes’ that offer residents a chance to interact with their neighbors or simply enjoy some privacy to unwind and relax. --- ## City Council Approved The Reserve at Rancho Belago Phase II (Moreno Valley) URL: https://gmplandarch.com/city-council-approved-the-reserve-at-rancho-belago-phase-ii-moreno-valley/ The Reserve at Rancho Belago Phase II, a 417 unit market rate apartment development in Moreno Valley, was recently unanimously approved by the City Council. This is the culmination of over 2 years of community meetings, site plan modifications and ‘big picture plans’ by the developer, Bridge Investment Group, to renovate and repurpose the Moreno Valley Ranch Golf Course and Clubhouse. GMP is fortunate to be part of the creative design team that is developing much needed housing, and will reactivate the long dormant golf course and clubhouse. Apartment site amenities will include a large recreation area with community pool, bbq pavilion and cabana spaces. Enlarged private patios will open to common area greenbelts with pathways that connect the residents to all areas of the site and the many active and passive spaces that include bocce ball courts, semi private gathering areas, bbq stations, a soccer area, and a large off leash dog area. European-style public plaza, located in Little Italy, San Diego, on what was formerly a portion of Date Street, connecting India and Columbia Streets. The design elements of the Piazza della Famiglia consist of cobblestone concrete pavers, art squares for public chalk art, and a custom designed three-tiered fountain, 500 s.f and 15’ tall, with resin elements, picking up on themes representative of family and the fishing history of the Little Italy community. Site amenities include views to the San Diego Bay, plaza seating throughout the piazza, as well as incorporated into the fountain design, and public use for regularly occurring events, like the Little Italy Farmers Market every Saturday morning. The Piazza is flanked by the North and South Tower apartment buildings. The North Tower is an 8-story upscale apartment complex, which offers a variety of experiences for its tenants. Dining opportunities include restaurant space on the ground level and a 2nd level restaurant patio. Community spaces are available in a 3rd level landscaped atrium and an 8th level roof deck with project amenities such as: an outdoor kitchen, a spa, fire pits, a dog park, and exercise decks. The parallel South Tower is a 5-story affordable housing apartment complex, which offers ground level retail and a roof deck, with a barbecue island, fire tables, and a variety of seating.
